We had a gorgeous fall day here with bright blue sky, crisp air, and brilliant sunshine. I was not much appreciative, tho, having a not-so-great morning. One of the gifts of raising kids is that they can be very helpful in taking your mind off yourself. Their needs are great and they’re not supposed to be too good at remembering you have needs, too. You’re just Mom, and unless you are doing really weird stuff, or unless I need you Right This Minute, well, you’re sorta wallpaper, more or less. Hopefully, you live long enough, and they live long enough… to see around the other side of that.

So it was that Michaela is Star of the Week this week at school. The two of us were mixing up a batch of oatmeal raisin cookies this afternoon. We took turns stirring. That’s the hard part, the stirring. First her turn ‘til she got tired, then my turn ‘til I got tired. Back and forth, just watching and mixing. And from nowhere, she says to me, “Mom, you know, life is kinda fun. You get be alive and not dead, and that’s the fun part.”

It’s a really humbling thing, this parenting.

I, too, think it's way more fun that you get to be alive and not dead. I can hear you improving with each post, Beth, and I'm very grateful.

Humbling indeed. Thanks Beth for your usual wise words from the ground level. :):)

From the mouths of babes . . .

It must be nice having a child with such basic wisdom at such a young age. It sounds like she's got her priorities right, that's for sure.

She's an old soul and it is good to learn from her.

I know exactly how that feels. When my son was younger, I was having a bad morning it was rainy and gloomy. I said something about what a yucky day. He looked me in the eye and said, Why do you say that? I don't think it is a yucky day. Made me feel like he was the adult and i the child. ;) haa haa But he was right! best wishes to you
