View Full Version : Too many document folders

When I did that nondestructive repair of my computer I ended up with multiple document folders all with various versions of my name, like just first name, first name last initial and two first names, one last initial. So I think I put a different name in this time. I tried putting everything in one folder but it won't let me delete the other document folders, which also contain "My Music", "My Pictures" etc. All I can think of is to make a CD of what I want to save and reformat the darn thing. I can use the Cobian backup program because there's too many folders with the same name.

Anybody know of a file management program that might work? Or any other ideas?

Thanks,

Roady

I'm -assuming- that you're using Windows XP or some variant and consequently I can't really speak about it because I don't have (and therefore can't practice on) XP myself for a firsthand experience -BUT- it sounds almost exactly like experiences I had many years ago working under Win 3.1 after a recovery effort with Norton Utilities. The only way to put it all back together after Norton did its thing was by hand.

Make sure the folders and files are not set to 'read-only', roll up your sleeves, take a deep breath, and dig in and sort it all out manually. Computers are all great and wonderful but they've made us all lazy (no offense intended). We can't always have a computer program do everything for us. Sometimes the only way to get things done the right way is to dig in and do it ourselves. It would be nice to have a program that will do everything for us automatically but sometimes the best or only way is to just dig in and do it manually and I'm afraid this is just such an instance.

Yes I do have XP. I have no problem getting my hands dirty with my computer, in fact that's how I got into this mess by cleaning up my computer to increase its speed. I'll try to see if I can make some of these folders "read only" but I was getting messages saying I couldn't delete because they were system folder. I'll wait unitl I'm not in the middle of a project.

BTW I did increase speed by not reinstalling Norton System's Works and using a freebee antivirus program. Made a huge difference.

No DON'T make them 'read only'. I was saying (or trying to) that if they ARE, then take the 'read-only' status OFF of them. Windoze has a bad habit of making things 'read-only' when you really need to get in there and modify them.

If those things are in the system folder then one thing that you might try is to boot into 'safe mode' and then perform your operations.

These are only ideas that I have and should not be taken as firm instructions as to what must happen. I don't -know- that anything I've said holds any water at all under the banner of operations of WinXP for aforementioned reasons.
