I have been using avg antivirus free and the avg antispyware free version.

However, my antispyware free trial runs out in 13 days.
I have a message which says:

Your tiral of AVG ant Spyware expires in 13 days. Then some important features such as the resident shield and automatic updates will be disabled. in order to be fully protected, you should consider buying the full version of AVG anti-spyware.

what should I do?

thanks

david :)

If you don't want to run the thing manually and you want it to be available all the time then register (pay for) it. If you think you can live with it by running it manually (which is what I would do) then just let it expire. It won't completely stop working if you let it expire. It will only limit itself to being run manually and it won't be able to run as memory resident (always on).

What I do with things like that is to set up a time when I know that I won't be doing anything else with the system for a while and then I run things like that. I run a full virus scan, and a couple of spyware scans when I'm eating lunch, or reading the paper or similar. I'm still protected that way and it's not that big a deal.

Seriously, there are no real worries here. They just want you to buy it for the "always on" memory resident feature and I'd be willing to bet that in your case that feature's not as important as they'd like you to think it is.

:D Which is NOT to say don't buy it. If a person really wants expert protections WITH on demand assistance from the company, then I highly recommend that a person go ahead and fork over the dough and buy the stuff. It's not necessary really,.... but it could be nice if you ever run into a real jam and don't have professional assistance immediately at hand.

In spite of the fact that I'm a "tightwad" I HAVE actually purchased a program or two or three in my life that I didn't really need to just to show support if nothing else.

For the moment I'll stay with the free version I have as I am not very well off financially.

Thanks for your help again.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the free version. I've stuck with it for a number of years now and it's saved my butt at least a couple of times. As I said before, the only thing the free version lacks is an "always on" or memory resident antispyware utility. If your computing habits don't take you into any place where you wouldn't ordinarily need an antispyware utility always running in the background then you'll be just fine. If you DO need a memory resident utility that's always monitoring everything you do on the internet then you might want to install Spybot Search & Destroy (which is a good idea anyway) and activate the memory resident feature of that. Something else that I just ran across (again) the other day is one called the "Arovax Shield". It'll do the same things and it's free also at the moment. It can be had at:
http://www.arovaxshield.com/

As for assistance with the free version of AVG you can also go right to the forum and do a search for any answers there, or if the answers aren't to be found you can join up and ask. I've been a member there for a couple of years now. The link for that is:

Thanks for these links, Paularoid.

This morning I got a message on screen saying my AVG Free would expire Jan 15. LOL

Anyway, I have now installed the 7.5 version and removed the old one. Seems to be working fine.
