It's been 40 years since Janis Ian wrote her first hit, "Society's Child," at age 14. It was, she says, a great introduction to the music business.
"Society's Child" openly discussed an interracial teen relationship. "Every major label in the country turned it down," says Ian, who will appear at the Lyric Theatre on Wednesday. "It was too scary.
"I remember thinking how odd it was that everybody was so scared of what was really just a three-minute song. But it was a good lesson in the power of songs."
Nine years later, Ian landed a smash with "At Seventeen," a down-tempo jazzy ballad about the awkwardness of teenage years.
