I have missed the original thread.
Is that being organized around one of the Janis's concerts?
Thank you
Lily
The second weekend in August. And unfortunately Janis won't be there, in spite of incessant whining and begging from at least one Rudie that I know of.
It's still going to be a grand time I'm sure. Redjack has a fantastic menu planned and a whole lot of us are flying in to attend. We'll play lots of Janis music, and probably have a screening or three of Club Cafe, so it will be the next best thing to Janis being there. Lucille/Wendy is coming from Australian and Marjan is coming from Holland. Not to mention me from California. ;) and a whole bunch of other happy travelers.
I hope you can join us.

I would have to say I'm 25% sure I could make it. Just a question, and no offense, Redjack, but how did you all settle on Pittsburgh for a locale, and not something more central, like Chicago? Nevertheless, it should be fun!

I don't know exactly how it all started except that Redjack is a superb cook/chef and he and/or Irish Beth got the idea that it would be fun to have a Rudie picnic in Pittsbugh, since that is where the 2 of them hail from. They probably can tell ya more about it though.

That is amazing how Janis draws people together even without being there! I would have come for sure, if I won't be flying over to the 2nd World Pride Parade in my home town Jerusalem, suppose to take place exactly 2nd week of August
Have fun everybody!

We picked Pittsburgh because it is kind of hard for Redjack to bring all the supplies, grills, foods, etc anywhere else. The park is practically in both of our back yards - just across the street from me actually. That allows us to use my refridgerator and house for supplies as we need them.
Lots of posters indicated a desire to taste the wonderful world-famous BBQ of that pirate Redjack - so I offered to help him with it and we thought we would put out an invitation and see who wanted to come party in Pittsburgh with great food and good people.
If it is a success, we will probably do it again in the future. But even thought Janis can't be there in person, her spirit will be. There will be tons of great food and drink, games, an auction of the life size Janis poster Lucille made, an opportunity to collect some funds for the Pearl foundation, live music, and opportunities to do other things - My famous drive-by tour of Pittsburgh, a trip on a river boat to see the three rivers, a wave-pool option, a uniquely Pittsburgh amusement park with a nationally ranked roller coaster, a trip to play slots in Wild and Wonderful Chester, West Virginia, depending on what people want to do, there will be a lot going on!
Come for a day, come for the week-end - it is up to you, but we would love to have you all there.
RedjackRyan
04-24-2006, 09:28 AM
Pretty much what Beth said, the only other possible location would have been Hampton Virginia where i have access to grills and a picnic location right in the family backyard.
Since the response has been so overwhelming, i doubt i'll be doing a lot of cooking on site, the ribs will have to be done before hand at the very least as they take about 6 hours. I'd love to make this a semi-regular event maybe shifting locations every couple years between the Virginia location and Pittsburgh. If i ever do buy/build the trailer grill rig of my dreams i'll have more flexibility but right now, it'll be an interesting logistical nightmare just getting the three grills i have now out to the picnic spot. I'll probably have some help in my sometime partner in grill-crime, mr Willie Slowhand James who does some wonderful creole cooking on his rig..
It will be a fun time, Beth mentioned some of the possibilities.. there are plenty of others.. A few wineries within reasonable driving distance for those who'd like to do that, the city has wonderful museums, an up and coming cultural district, a seven block long market district with lots of cool curio shops and food stores.. Elsewhere in the city there are great little mini shopping areas similar to the South Side area that many of you have enjoyed..Its a great city full of neat little nooks and crannies. Wonderful architecture if you know where to look and communities steeped in history.. Movie buffs might enjoy seeing locations where films like Night of the Living Dead, Striking Distance, and Inspector Gadget were filmed.
Come for the food, the friendship, and take home memories that will last a lifetime.

Hey Redjack, have you ever considered working for the Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce? ;) You'd have convinced me to go except I already am!!
Looking forward to it!
Marcia :)
RedjackRyan
04-24-2006, 10:00 AM
Someone needs to work for the chamber of commerce, they can't seem to get their heads out of their behinds..
What can i say Marcia, I love this town.. love it enough to stay here!
Looking forward to spending some more time with you and Bat as well.. Would love to give you the grand tour of the city.
I think part of the appeal of Pittsburgh is in the neighborhood structure, because we are a city bisected by rivers and mountains, many of the neighborhoods have very distinct personalities unto themselves.. I havent encountered a city like it anywhere else to be honest. Getting 'round in Pittsburgh can be a challenge (As Diverboy found out) thanks to the geography, but its also the thing that makes us a very unique city.
Denise

04-24-2006, 10:06 AM
Redjack, from what little I have seen of it, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati are very much alike! The river (rivers in your case) and the distinct neighborhoods as well. People who've visited us have said that Cinci reminds them of Pittsburgh. It will be interesting to have time to see for myself.
Yes, really looking forward to spending more time with ya.
Marcia :)

Marcia, despite having a cousin that lives in Cincy, i've never been there. He does say its a lovely city though he's never compared it to Pittsburgh. We'll have to compare notes..

I think Beth and I agreed on no later than July 21st, I suppose i should make an official announcement. I've asked Beth to be the finance keeper for this event.. we'll get address info to folks shortly via e-mail.
I'd also like to do a little planning meeting in the next week or so with you, PkOwen, Beth, Marcia, Dar, and myself just to go over the menu, figure out what else we need/don't need and do some strategizing.
Anyone else interested in cooking or prep work ( you'll need to be coming into Pittsburgh on Friday) give a shout. Oh thats right, i have two other lackeys..er um.. helpers[ coming in from Charlottesville... :D yeah, we'll be putting them to work too .. :D They just volunteered a minute ago.
Hows that 'thing' we discussed? Do you need anything else from me?

Sort of like a pizelle .. only better..
Well...................
They are a little taste of heaven, here's a description from the website of the place in Montana I order them from. I will be bringing a bunch to Pittsburgh so we can compare 'mine' to the official ones Marjan is bringing from Holland.
You can NEVER have too many stroopwafels. Unless it's really really hot and they melt all over, but even then, they still taste divine.
>>These delicious Caramel Cookie Waffles (called stroopwafels by the Dutch) with richly filled chewy centers are one of Holland's true specialties. Our Caramel Cookie Waffles are hand baked on flame fired irons from the finest and freshest ingredients and shipped fresh, directly to you. A vanilla and cinnamon cookie dough is pressed between flame heated waffle irons, split, and filled with fresh homemade caramel. A Stroopwafel is born !
They ARE sort of like a cinnamon pizzelle, like Rickster said, only split in half and filled with caramel. Rick, my nonna made her pizzelles with anise flavoring, but I may change her recipe to use cinnamon....never thought of it before now!! mmmmm

I drove to Annette's place this afternoon and we both went to a travel agency and booked our flight.
We will arrive at Aug 9 and stay until Aug 15 in Pittsburgh.
We've rent a car from Aug 14 with the intention to travel slowly toward Newark, arriving there around Aug 18.
And spend the rest of the time visiting New York, leaving from there at Aug 21 heading home. :D

Gee, have to be away for a couple of days and I find the Dutch rudies booking accomadations across PA! As we have discussed before, Marjan, I sure hope you're planning to stop in Honesdale! After all you have the sweatshirt to make you fit right in!

PS (Of course if you wear that sweatshirt here you'll be pegged for a tourist in a minute! But then we treat our tourists very well as Randy and Betty will soon be able to attest!)

Hi, Jan-nics in the park,
I am looking forward to see you all in August.
Now that I finally made the decision to come to the Jan-nic Pittsburgh pick nick, can’t wait to leave, I am very excited to visit your country once again.
In the early nineties I visited my friends who lived in Budd Lake, New Jersey several times.
So I was in Port Jervis (with a boat on the Delaware), not far from Honesdale, Leslie and visited New Hope several times, so I have passed Easton, Randy. Thank you for the invitations. I will discuss it with Marjan.
And thank you, Redjack, for making the reservations!
Annette.
