Hi, All,
Well, I just got back home a couple of minutes ago after seeing the Roches perform at the Sage, Gateshead, (on the very same stage Janis will be on), and what a great night.
I don't know how I'd managed to miss hearing about them for so many years, but their name has come up on this board a few times, and when I noticed they were playing, thought I'd go along, so I booked my ticket last month. (And then spent that month deliberately not looking up info or trying to find any of their songs, sort of a surprise for me, I figured.)
They blew me away! The singing and playing were tremendous, and the songs had you laughing one minute, then literally crying the next, (remind you of anyone?), and the rapport with the very appreciative audience was there from the onset. One nice touch was that one of the Roches' daughters was there, Lucy, and she got up to give a song too.
The Hall is quite small, about 300+ at a guess, with a nice sense of intimacy, and great acoustics, and the inhouse lighting set-up seemed perfect, so I'll be looking forward to seeing Janis there.
I'd recommend anyone to go and see this troupe, exquisite and entertaining, oh, and they also come out after the show to meet and greet!
Regards,
PeteCC

Hi PeteCC,
I've been a Roches fan for a long time, but haven't seen them live in quite some years. (Last time was at the Bottom Line in NYC, back in the late eighties.) Surprised to hear that they performed together, all three of them? The most recent CD I have is by Suzzy and Maggie, without Terri, called "Why the Long Face". I've always thought that Maggie is the best writer of the three, Terri has the best singing voice, and Suzzy is, well, the funniest one, I guess. I agree, though, really lovely harmonies and interesting, quirky songs.
Ever see a film called "Crossing Delancey" with Peter Riegert and Amy Irving? It's a sweet romantic comedy, features music by the Roches, and Suzzy actually plays a minor role (and quite well).
My favorite CDs of their are their first and second, both produced by Robert Fripp, who really brought out the best in them and knew how to mix their sound just right. I also like their later stuff, though, especially "Can We Go Home Now".
So nice to hear they're still performing. And yeah I can see a few similarities to Janis, although of course, as good as they are (and I say this about practically every singer/songwriter out there), they're no Janis Ian.

All three Roches? I'd no idea they were performing as a trio again....so glad to hear it.
Some other movie used their version of "The Hallelujah Chorus" over the credits--can't remember the title for the life of me. Some comedy set in a Catholic girls' school if I remember right.
No, they're not Janis....but I'm sure Janis would be happy to admit that she's not The Weird Sisters either.

I love the Roches. Have never seen them live. Their Christmas album is fabulous (really). I just ordered their first album on CD last week and am awaiting its delivery.
Funny,
I am scrolling old posts to find the link to the Dancing Dog and Lady (You're the One That I Want) and came across this Roches thread.
I happen to be wearing my very old Roches Works in Progress Tee Shirt!
But while i'm here, can anyone redirect me to that fun and delicous video clip?
Thanks,
seth
Seth, it has been a while. Good to see you posting again.

I saw the Roches 3 or 4 years back for the one and only time at the Glasgow Celtic festival when Janis played there. Both my wife and I were suitably impressed by them and said we would go see them when they next toured. We gutted to find we had missed them when they played fairly near us recently.
Thanks Eva,
Nice to be missed and noticed. The new joborino has working round the clock and then some.
Thanks for the link dee.
hey Charile!!!! good to c u here!

Some years ago I had a brief correspondence with Terre Roche (the result of my writing with a question about a song and discovering she has friends/family in Minnesota). Along the way I asked if I could have a signed photo and she promised to send me one signed by all three sisters.
Someone else apparently made the same request at the same time and Terre set out to oblige them as well. And somewhere in the process the photos and envelopes got swapped. So, one day, I got a beautiful photo in the mail, elaborately signed and inscribed "To Shawn's Friend Claire".
You folks who know me know I couldn't possibly leave that alone. So I sent Terre Roche a very tongue-in-cheek letter about the mix-up which, thankfully, she "got". She replied with a very funny letter about the ability of the Post Office to move items from one sealed envelope to another, etc. "As for Claire," she wrote, "no doubt she is out there....thinking of you...."
I can only hope Claire laughed as well.
Still have not seen The Roches in concert but I keep hoping the opportunity will arise. From what people have said they appear to be performing as a trio again? I know for a while they were all pursuing separate ventures.
years ago I wanted the musifc for the song Everyone is Good for an assembly at my elementary school celebating gay and lesbian awareness month. Terre was kind enough to write out the song with melody and chords and send it to me.
The kids loved singing the song.
